Step 1 - The basics – logging in and out, saving changes, basic do’s and don’ts
1.1 - Logging in
To log into the CMS system simply got to your home page and then type ‘/CMS’ after the domain name. For instance, www.yourdomainname.co.uk/CMS Note: the CMS does need to be in capitals. You will be asked for a username and password – enter these and you will be presented with the CMS home page for your web site.
On the left hand side, there are clickable links to the various editable sections of your web site – simply click on the page you wish to edit. Wait a few seconds and then the editing screen will fully load displaying the current page contents in the editing window. Additionally, below this window you will see three further options to change the page title, description and keywords…more on these later.
1.2 - Saving changes
If you have made changes to your content, always remember to finish the process by clicking the ‘Submit’ button at the bottom of the page otherwise your changes will not be saved.
1.3 - Basic do’s and don’ts
Do’s
- Check your spellings and grammar before saving
- Use the Firefox internet browser for best results
- Log out when you’ve finished
- Be familiar with the guidance in this manual before attempting any changes to your site
- When saving files, images, documents, etc. it is good practice to always use lower case characters, and to not leave gaps or spaces or use punctuation apart from the under_score. A good file name would be: 090601_picture_of_me.jpg (with the date being YYMMDD to ensure you never end up with file names conflicting with each other)
Don’ts
- Copy text straight from Word, Excel or any other ‘office’ software package into the CMS system (see next section)
- Save – unless you’ve checked what you’ve done!
1.4 - Logging out
Quite simply, when you’ve finished, checked your editing, submitted the changes and then checked your web site live to see that it still looks amazing, simply click the LOGOUT option on the top right hand side of the CMS system.
